Hayes calls for filter light at Bushy Park House
Local Fine Gael TD, Brian Hayes has today (Thursday) rejected a response he received from Dublin City Council concerning the provision of a filter traffic light at the Templeogue Road/Fortfield Road junction.
Minister Hayes stated, “I was recently approached by residents of Bushy Park House who are continually faced with obstacles when accessing their estate. The current layout of the junction does not provide a filter light for residents travelling from Templeogue village to turn right into their estate.”
Minister Hayes continued, “I believe that the decision of Dublin City Council, who is responsible for the junction, not to provide a filter light is wrong. They (DCC) have stated that they have made alternations to the light sequence and are satisfied that this will alleviate the problems.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “I do not accept this response. There is a large volume of houses and apartments in the estate and the entrance is also used to access Our Ladys Secondary School. I have asked the Roads Department in South Dublin County Council to liaise with Dublin City Council on this matter.”

Minister Hayes Opens “Wandering Methods”, Explorations of Slow Craft Exhibition at Rathfarnham Castle
Mr. Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), today opened a new exhibition entitled “Wandering Methods, Explorations of Slow Craft” in Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin 14.
Speaking at the exhibition Minister Hayes said: “The Office of Public Works is pleased to be working in partnership with the Bealtaine Festival and Craftspace UK to bring this wonderful exhibition to one of our most important historic properties. The exhibition aims to mix historical references with contemporary stories to bring new relevance and meaning to a familiar place.”
The Minister continued: “Wandering Methods is an exhibition of craft work inspired by the Castle, and created by a group of people living in the Rathfarnham area, who will work, over the coming months, with two artists, Linda Florence and Maeve Clancy. The group will learn craft skills from the two artists, as well as delve into the history of the Castle building and their associations and histories of the Rathfarnham area. The Castle is a rich site to mine for memory, narrative and story. The project is interpreting these into imaginative, innovative contemporary visual art and craft and presenting it for wider public participation and engagement. The shared creative process will animate this wonderful historic building, exploring the layering of time history and heritage. An exhibition of what is emerging will then be exhibited here in the Castle.”
The Minister concluded: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in bringing this exhibition to Rathfarnham Castle. This exhibition will run in tandem with the Berkeley Toy and Costume exhibition which many of you will have already seen and enjoyed. Rathfarnham Castle is undergoing a number of transformations this year, both to the interior of the Castle and to the grounds. It is hoped that the Castle will be used next year during Ireland’s Presidency of the EU, offering, as it does, excellent facilities in a picturesque setting.”

Fettercairn Horse Project gets a new Lodger
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister responsible for the OPW, Brian Hayes, has today (Monday) handed over “Fabian” an Irish Draught Horse to Fettercairn Youth Horse Project.
Speaking at the event in Fettercairn which was attended by students from St Annes Primary School, Minister Hayes stated, “Fabian is an Irish Draught Horse, a traditional Irish Breed. In fact during last years Royal visit both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were particularly complementary of Fabian during their stay in Farmleigh.”
Minister Hayes continued, “A number of weeks ago I was informed by staff in Farmleigh that Fabian would benefit greatly from increased handling and daily contact with professional horse trainers. On that basis I suggested that Fabian should go to a community facility that would be of benefit to many people. I am very much aware of the excellent work done here in Fettercairn by Laurence and his team and its contribution to the Fettercairn Community.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “I am delighted to be here today to officially handover the reigns of Fabian from the OPW to Fettercairn Horse Project. I know that his presence in the centre will be of great benefit to the community and hope that many will get the opportunity to see him in future events representing Fettercairn.”

Hayes welcomes roll-out of a further 6,000 new places on Springboard
Ensuring that Dublin South West graduates are job-ready will benefit jobseekers as well as industry
Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes today [Monday] welcomed the announcement of 6,000 new college places which are being made available to unemployed people who want to upskill, as part of the Springboard initiative.
Minister Hayes went on to say that not only will these new places enable jobseekers to retrain and gain the relevant skills needed to get a job, they will also ensure that the right skills are being taught to meet the needs of industry.
“Springboard, which was set up as part of the Government’s Jobs Initiative a year ago, has proved to be an enormous success. So far 5 ,000 people have taken up free, part time higher education courses, with 3,500 of those due to graduate this month.
“The announcement of a further 6,000 college places will come as great news to those who are looking to retrain and upskill for the jobs that are currently available. As these places are targeted to meet the current and future skills requirements of industry, they will also be warmly welcomed by business leaders and entrepreneurs.
“The situation for many jobseekers these days is that the sector in which they once worked, such as the construction industry, has suffered serious collapse, leaving them well qualified with plenty of experience but for the wrong job. It is essential that we now ensure that the skills needed for the new jobs that are coming on stream are acquired. The focus for the future has to be on sectors such as Information and Communication Technology, the biopharma-pharmachem sector and the medical devices sector.
“I also welcome the changes that have been introduced for this round of the programme with the eligibility criteria being opened up. Springboard courses are now available to those who were previously self-employed and those in receipt of Disability Allowance and the Carer’s Allowance.
“I am encouraging all jobseekers in Dublin South West to log onto www.springboardcourses.ie and to examine what is on offer. The Government is intent on finding the best way of getting people back to work. By identifying where the gaps are in business and training the unemployed to fill those gaps, we can get people back into the jobs market while ensuring that the needs of industry are also met.”

South Dublin Chamber of Commerce becomes the latest business group to endorse a Yes vote – Hayes
Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has welcomed the news that South Dublin Chamber of Commerce has become the latest business group to give their support to the Stability Treaty.
“I was delighted to learn that South Dublin Chamber of Commerce is strongly advocating a Yes vote in the upcoming Referendum on the Stability Treaty. A multitude of local, national and international business groups have come out in support of the Treaty, because they recognise that a Yes vote will be a key step in driving economic recovery.
“Chambers Ireland joins IBEC, ISME, the Small Firms Association and many other business groups who are actively campaigning for a Yes vote. A Yes vote will help deliver the stability and certainty that businesses need, and will be a critical step in bringing about the right conditions for growth.
“The Government has been taking a series of steps in recent months aimed at making it cheaper and easier to do business and create jobs. The Action Plan for Jobs, launched earlier this year, is being monitored on a quarterly basis to ensure every government department is fulfilling its commitments. A number of headline measures will be delivered this year, including the €100 million micro-finance loan scheme and a partial loan guarantee scheme.
“Companies with export potential are also being specifically targeted and supported, to help them grow their business and access lucrative markets overseas. All of these measures rely on the renewed confidence in the Irish economy being maintained. This confidence can only be secured with a Yes vote on May 31st.
“As well as the need for confidence, businesses also understand the need to access funding when you need it. Voting Yes to the Stability Treaty is the only way to ensure we have access to the ESM, Europe’s new bailout fund, should we ever need it. Businesses also appreciate the final element of the Treaty; sticking to sensible budget rules.
“The fact that the business community is fully behind the Stability Treaty highlights the fact that it will be a key step as we rebuild a working Ireland with certainty and confidence.”

Hayes approves over €300K to protect Tallaght homes from flooding
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes, yesterday announced €333,000 for flood relief works in Tallaght.
Minister Hayes stated “Flooding problems arising from the Killinarden Stream and its tributaries has been a persistent problem in the West Tallaght area for many years. It has especially been a problem in the Knockmore Estate. We all saw the consequences of the floods last October and the impact it had, destroying a number of houses and businesses and cutting off access to many estates as well as the closure of the N81.”
Minister Hayes continued, “A total of 66 homes and a number of commercial premises were destroyed last October with the high volume of rain. The flood prevention measures in place were not able to cope with the sheer volume of rainwater.
Minister Hayes further stated, “In the aftermath of the flooding I visited a number of families whose homes were affected and saw at first hand the damage. It’s hard to believe that over a short space of time the water levels in hallways and kitchens were above radiators and kitchen presses. I brought together officials from South Dublin County Council and my own Department – OPW and asked that they work together to put in place measures to ensure that something like this never happens again. ”
Commenting on the works to take place, Minister Hayes stated, “The works will involve four principal elements. Firstly three screens located on the Jobstown and Killinarden Streams will be redesigned. The building of a new swale and the increase of the existing wall at Knockmore Park and Avenue will compliment this in order to divert flood flows from residential areas. The third element is the installation of two new screens and headwalls at the N81 and DeSelby. The final part of the works will involve improvements to the maintenance of the stream located between Hazelgrove Golf club and Jobstown Inn.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “These works will finally address the major problem of flooding in these areas and will also give greater protection to householders. I hope that these works will be completed in the coming months.”

Hayes welcomes announcement of additional Job Bridge places
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Brian Hayes has welcomed the announcement of 1,000 additional places on the governments successful Job Bridge Scheme.
Minister Hayes stated, “Last July the Government announced the National Internship Programme which helped thousands of people who feel stuck on the Live Register gain access to the jobs market. There are a huge number of very talented people who are out of work at present and Job Bridge has offered many of them a chance to get back on the ladder to full time employment.”
Minister Hayes continued, “These additional 1,000 places brings the total number of places available to 6,000 with immediate effect. I also warmly welcome the extension of the eligibility criteria to include those in receipt of One Parent Family Payment and Disability Allowance. The success of this scheme over the past 10 months in unquestionable. Of the 2,000 people across the country who have completed the scheme, 797 or almost 40% have gone into full time employment.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “ I am encouraging job seekers and employers across Dublin South West to avail of this scheme. It will be hugely beneficial for participants on both sides. For job seekers, the programme offers invaluable hands-on experience and access to contacts and references that can only enhance the possibility of securing full time employment. And for the companies involved, the scheme allows them to bring talented and enthusiastic individuals into their organisation.”

Vote YES to a Working Ireland – Hayes & Keane
Fine Gael Oireachtas representatives for Dublin South West, Brian Hayes TD and Senator Cáit Keane have urged the people of Dublin South West to vote Yes to a Working Ireland in the upcoming referendum on the Stability Treaty. Minister Hayes and Senator Keane added that a Yes vote is a key step in our recovery and will be crucial if we want to continue attracting inward investment.
Senator Keane stated: “I am urging everyone across Dublin South West to come out and vote Yes on May 31st. This Treaty is in the best interest of the country as we continue along the path to recovery. The Treaty is about Ireland; it is about what position we want to put ourselves in as we get back on our feet as a country.
Minister Hayes added: “The Treaty doesn’t have all the answers but it is an essential part of the picture as we move forward on our journey to economic recovery. It will help to restore stability, not just in Ireland but also across the Eurozone. And a small country that relies heavily on exports, it’s vital that Ireland remains a central part of that marketplace.
Minister Hayes and Senator Keane further added: “Inward investment is a very important part of Ireland’s economy. Job creating investors have made a number of significant announcements in the last few months, bringing thousands of jobs to this country. PayPal, Apple, Mastercard, Sky, HP and Mylan are just some of the international firms that have chosen to make huge investments here so far this year, bringing with them thousands of jobs.
“Ireland’s international reputation has been rebuilt since this Government came to office. This was made abundantly clear in the Taoiseach’s recent visits to the United States and China. Ireland is seen as a country that is likely to succeed, and worth investing in. We don’t want to put this reputation in jeopardy.
“Voting Yes will also provide Ireland with an important insurance policy. By signing up to the Treaty, we will be able to access the ESM, Europe’s new bailout fund, should we ever need it. Having this backstop in place will also help to further build confidence – investors want to know we are fully funded into the future. A No vote would mean we are cutting ourselves off from this funding.
“The Stability Treaty is about good housekeeping; it requires countries across Europe to sign up to sensible budget rules to make sure governments can’t make irresponsible decisions. We want to make sure that the mistakes of the past, that nearly pushed this country over the edge, cannot be allowed to happen again.
“This is the most important question to be put the Irish people in recent years. The Government is launching the most comprehensive campaign ever held for a European treaty in this country. A 40 page booklet is being delivered to every home in the country because we want people to fully understand the Treaty and its implications for Ireland.”

Hayes confirms over €1million in funding for sustainable travel projects across South Dublin
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has today confirmed that over €1 million will be allocated to South Dublin County Council for public transport and sustainable travel projects.
Minister Hayes stated “In total 14 projects across South Dublin will benefit from this funding, 4 of which are in Dublin South West. I am delighted that South Dublin have benefited greatly by this announcement. The money released will be used by South Dublin County Council to develop cycle lanes, new pathways, traffic management, junction upgrades, bus stops and taxi bays.
Minister Hayes continued, “I am happy to see that one of the projects given the go ahead is the development of new pedestrian footpaths and cycle ways in Kiltipper leading to both Aylesbury and Tallaght Stadium. This will involve the upgrading of the existing pedestrian route to both a walking and cycling route. Many people use this area regularly as it is a key link to Bohernabreena and the Dublin Mountains.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “Other projects to be carried out across Dublin South West include measures to improve the walking and cycling environment in the Tallaght Town Centre area including upgrading existing signage as well as the upgrading of cycle lanes on Templeogue Road.”

Credit Guarantee Bill will help small businesses in Dublin South West to access credit and create jobs
Minister of State and local Fine Gael TD, Brian Hayes has said that the Credit Guarantee Bill 2012, which has been published by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, will make it easier for small and medium businesses in Dublin South West to access credit and create jobs.
“Access to credit is the biggest single challenge facing businesses across Dublin South West. Every week I meet local business people who express their frustration and dismay at their inability to access credit from the banks. Small and medium businesses need a reliable stream of credit to function, particularly in the current difficult trading environment. The Credit Review Bill will directly tackle this problem.
“The Bill provides for the establishment of the Temporary Partial Credit Guarantee Scheme, which will help commercial viable SMEs struggling to get finance. It will support businesses that have insufficient collateral, and those that are operating in sectors with which the banks are not familiar. Under the Scheme the State will provide a 75% guarantee to banks against losses on loans they give to firms with growth potential.
“This will allow for tens of millions of euro to flow into Irish business, which, in turn, can strengthen and expand their operations and create jobs. Initially, the Scheme will facilitate an extra €150 million in lending per year – that will benefit more than 1,800 businesses across the country. This lending will be on top of the lending targets already set down for the two pillar banks.
“There are obvious positive knock on benefits for the wider economy from this Scheme. By supporting viable businesses, the Government is helping to get people off the live register and stimulate local economic activity. It’s estimated that there will be a net gain for the Exchequer of €25 million per €150 million in lending.
“For the businesses involved there are also benefits beyond the initial access to credit; the Scheme will allow them to build up a positive track record with the lender, which should make it easier to secure traditional loans in the future.
“The publication of the Credit Guarantee Bill is a key commitment under quarter one of the Action Plan for Jobs. A range of other measures under the plan will be delivered this year aimed at improving conditions to help businesses to flourish and create jobs.”

Under this scheme pitches will be drained, floodlights will be installed, sports halls will be improved and dressing rooms will be built. Thanks to these grants, people will have more opportunities than ever to get active and stay active in a wide range of sports. It will also have a positive impact on job creation in construction.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “ I am delighted that the sports capital programme has been reinstated. This programme has benefited many clubs in the past and I encourage clubs and organisations across Dublin South West to make an application.”

Hayes announces €500,000 flood relief works for Dublin South West
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes, has today announced €500,000 for flood relief works in Dublin South West.
Minister Hayes stated “Flooding problems arising from the River Poddle has been a persistent problem in the Templeogue and Limekiln area for many years. We all saw the consequences of the floods last October and the impact it had, particularly in the Willington, Osprey and Limekiln areas. The main cause of the flooding in these areas late last year was the lack of capacity within Tymon Park to hold large amounts of floodwater.”
Minister Hayes continued “Following last Octobers’ floods myself and my colleague Cllr Colm Brophy met with South Dublin County Council to identify what measures could be put in place to address this issue and prevent future flooding. My department recently received a proposal from South Dublin County Council that includes the redesign and installation of new trash screens, works to two restrictive pedestrian bridges and maintenance, dredging and widening of the river. The cost of this work will be €250,000. I have today approved this funding and have communicated this to South Dublin County Council.
Minister Hayes further stated, “In addition to the above funding being provided to South Dublin County Council, the second part of the scheme, namely works to increase the attenuation capacity in Tymon Park will be advanced directly by the direct labour force within the OPW. Therefore the total cost of works along the River Poddle will be €500,000. These works will not only benefit Dublin South West but also further downstream such as Harold’s Cross which experienced serious flooding resulting in the lost of one life last October.
Minister Hayes concluded, “These works will finally address the major problem of flooding in these areas and will also give greater protection to householders. I hope that these works will be completed by the end of this coming Summer. I am also aware of other parts of South Dublin that suffered serious flooding last October and that the Council are currently preparing proposals to address these matters.”

SDCC to receive more than €11 million for social housing
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has welcomed the announcement by the Housing Minister, Jan O’Sullivan TD that more than €11 million is to be provided to South Dublin County Council for the provision and improvement of social housing units.
Minister Hayes stated “There has been an increase in the number of people applying for social housing across South Dublin in recent years. Due to our current economic situation, the Government has been forced to come up with new ways of ensuring social housing continues to be provided and maintained.”
Minister Hayes continued; “Just over €5 million will be spent on improving the existing housing stock – such as increasing energy efficiency. A further €6 million will be spent on increasing the housing supply. This will be done in a number of ways. There will be a focus on vacant units, so they can become part of the housing stock. The Capital Advance Leasing Facility will also help to boost the number of social housing units by providing an up front equality stake of 30% of the property value to approved voluntary housing bodied who raise private finance to acquire or build new units, using leasing payments to repay loans in respect of their equity share.”
Minister Hayes concluded; “It is important that the Government continues to prioritise social housing provision at this time of economic difficulty. The allocation of €11 million for South Dublin County Council is a very significant investment.”

Hayes welcomes patronage of new primary schools
2 Educate Together Schools and 1 County Dublin VEC for Dublin South West
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister Quinn of the patronage of three new primary schools in Dublin South West. Of the three schools, two of them will be Educate Together and the third a County Dublin VEC school.
Minister Hayes stated, “I am delighted with Minister Quinns announcement this morning. Last year it was announced that three new primary schools would be established across Dublin South West. Two of these were to be located in the Citywest/Fortunestown Area and one in the Old Bawn/Firhouse area. At that time the Minister also announced new criteria and arrangements for the recognition of the new schools. The arrangements included the establishment of a New Schools Establishment Group, an independent advisory group, to advise the Minister on the patronage of the new schools. Patrons were asked to provide evidence of parental demand when making an application for a new school. In addition, the criteria used in deciding on patronage included how the proposed schools under the respective patrons would provide for extending or strengthening diversity of provision in each area.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “It is great to see that two of the schools will be under the patronage of Educate Together and the third a County Dublin VEC school. In particular I would like to pay tribute to the committee of Dublin 24 Educate Together who have been campaigning for an Educate Together school in Dublin South West since May 2008. When I was Opposition Education Spokesman I visited many Educate Together Schools across the country. I know from attending local meetings of the Dublin 24 Committee that they have worked endlessly in building up relationships, fundraising and getting pre enrolment names. It is great to see their hard work finally pay off – not only has their campaign delivered one school but they secured a second.

Government delivers on promise to get rid of expensive prefab classrooms
Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes, has today welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn, that six schools in South Dublin, two of which are based in Dublin South West will receive grant aids to replace their existing prefab classrooms with permanent structures.
“I am delighted that two schools in Dublin South West, St Marys and St Marks, will finally be able to build permanent, state-of-the-art classrooms, after so many years of wasting a huge amount of money renting prefab classrooms, which could have been put towards other vital education services.
“When I was Fine Gael Education Spokesperson I consistently called for this serious waste of money which was spent on renting prefabs to be addressed. Despite the massive amount of spending that went on during the boom, the previous Government did nothing to address this. Instead they continued renting prefabs; in 2007 alone, 715 new rental contracts were signed.
“I am delighted that this Government is now addressing this problem and 200 permanent structures across the country will be built this year, which covers over a third of all schools who currently rent prefabs. A total of €35 million has been allocated and it is estimated the 6,000 pupils will benefit.
“Since this Government was formed, the Minister for Education has been focused on reforming our education system, despite constrained resources. Today’s announcement is an example of identifying where money is being wasted. Building sustainable classrooms will save approximately €5 million per year and create an estimated 700 direct and 140 indirect jobs.
“This announcement is not part of the five-year building programme which will be announced in the coming weeks. Today’s initiative forms part of the Government’s €430 million education infrastructure plan for 2012. The investment in the School Building Programme this year, including the replacement of prefabs, will create an estimated 3,250 direct and 650 indirect jobs.”
This morning I officially launched Enginners Week at Rua Red with

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has today (Wednesday) welcomed clarification from the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, that 235 DEIS teaching posts, which had been due to be axed under Budget cuts, will now be retained.
Minister Hayes stated “I am relieved that the Minister has taken on board the concerns of teachers and parents in relation to the proposed cuts at DEIS Band 1 and Band 2 schools. This is a welcome development as we attempt to combat disadvantage and tackle issues regarding literacy and numeracy among young vulnerable children.
Minister Hayes concluded. “I would like to commend the Minister for listening to the concerns expressed by myself and other Deputies in recent weeks and allowing DEIS status schools retain these vital important teaching posts.”

Minister Hayes stated, “I am delighted that Dublin Bus have finally agreed to establish a bus shelter at the 54A bus terminus in Kiltipper. I have lobbied Dublin Bus for many years now to provide a bus shelter in the area and each time it has been refused.”
Minister Hayes continued “The bus stop is very exposed and many residents in the area have raised the issue of a bus shelter with me. I contacted Dublin Bus two weeks ago asking them to again consider the placing of a bus shelter, given the changes to the 54A timetable which means longer gaps between buses.”
Minister Hayes concluded, “I am delighted that Dublin Bus have finally agreed to provide a bus shelter. Having checked records in my office I have contacted Dublin Bus on this exact issue 12 times over the past year and a half. The decision will be greatly welcomed by residents in Kiltipper.”
Note: Dublin Bus intends to apply for planning permission shortly – if granted the shelter should be in place by May 2012.

Mr. Brian Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with special responsibility for the OPW
At the announcement of an international competition for the design and construction of a new post primary school in Kingswood, Tallaght
- I would like to thank the Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, T.D., for inviting me to take part in the announcement today of the details of the planned expenditure for school buildings in 2012
- As you know, I worked very closely with Minister Quinn in our time as opposition spokespersons for education and we both had a particular interest in the school building programme.
Post Primary School Design Competition
- I am also delighted to be participating in the announcement of the Post Primary School Design Competition.
- This is particularly important for me as the new school to be built as a result of this competition will be in Kingswood, Tallaght.
- This is a school for which the Department of Education purchased a site many years ago and it is now very good news to hear of the confirmation of the plans for the school to open in the school year 2017/18.
- The international competition for the new school in Kingswood represents a brilliant opportunity to involve the latest thinking in post primary school design.
It’s a great boost for our local community.

€55,000 in funding for South Dublin County Council will help tackle litter and graffiti.
Minister of State and Local Fine Gael TD, Brian Hayes has welcomed funding totalling €55,000 for South Dublin County Council to help tackle the problem of litter and graffiti. The funding has been announced by the Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan, as part of the provision of more than €2 million in grants to local authorities nationwide.
“Maintaining the appearance of areas is not only important for the morale of people living in local communities, it is a key factor in driving economic growth and boosting tourism figures. The funding being provided by Minister Hogan will help local authorities to tackle littering through awareness raising, enforcement and the maintenance of tourist areas.
“A total of €55,000 has been allocated to South Dublin County Council under the Anti-Litter and Anti-Graffiti Awareness Scheme. Using this money, local authorities will be able to select projects that promote greater public awareness and education in relation to litter and graffiti. This includes supporting voluntary initiatives run by community groups, which play such a vital role in the upkeep of our towns and villages.
“In a bid to ensure that locations that are popular with tourists are kept clean, €20,000 is being provided to South Dublin County Council under the Tourist Season Anti-Litter Grant. This will help with the maintenance of visitor locations and approach roads. Litter can leave a very poor and lasting impression on visitors, so we must do all we can to ensure popular locations are kept in top shape.
“A further €750,000 is being made available nationally under the new Litter Enforcement Scheme, to help crack down on littering and illegal dumping. This money can be used by local authorities to deploy mobile CCTV cameras and other measures to identify those responsible for these activities.
“We all have a role to play in the upkeep of our own communities. Local authorities, community and voluntary groups all do excellent work to maintain the appearance of streets, roads and scenic areas; this funding will help to support them in this work.”
